CAF aids
Subject to certain conditions, the Caisse d'Allocations Familiales awards financial support for accommodation. Come and find out more.
THE CAISSE D'ALLOCATIONS FAMILIALES (CAF)
Once the lease agreement has been signed, you can apply for housing support from the Caisse d'Allocations Familiales (CAF). Award criteria depend on individual personal circumstances (student income, rent amounts, type of apartment, etc.).
Applications can only be made on the CAF website. Make sure to complete the procedure as soon as possible so you don't miss out on any allowances. Applications are sent directly once they have been approved.
Only the supporting documents need to be sent by mail or electronically. There is no need to visit in person!
It is also possible to simulate the amount of housing support potentially available online.
International students must have lived
in France for at least three months to apply for housing support, and also have a lease agreement and a French bank account.
Important!
Holders of visas with the statement "dispense temporaire de carte de séjour" are not eligible to apply for housing support.
Supporting documents required may vary from those required from French residents.

Changes as of 1 January 2020
From 1 January 2020, the income taken into consideration will be that of the 12 last months, rather than year Y-2. Remember to highlight any changes in circumstances, particularly if you are a student looking for employment with a salary for new PhD students receiving an allowance!
Important!
If a student under 20 (or in similar circumstances) applies for housing support, they will no longer be considered dependent on their parents, which could have an impact on any family allowances received (reduction or termination). Once over 20 (or 21), students are no longer considered dependent by the CAF and it would be in their interest to make an individual application.
Social housing leases
To benefit from social housing, there are two solutions: Sign up at the social housing center for your place of residence. Allocations are subject to various conditions. Applications are valid for 1 year and must be renewed yearly. Some social housing organizations reserve apartments for students. Find out more from your neighborhood.
